Planting little miracles

I spent the weekend planting my little section of the orchard.  Terry tilled the soil and we removed a few large rocks.  But for the most part the soil seems very good.  It is soft and almost fluffy.  On Sunday it was quite windy and it was hard to work without getting dirt in your eyes and mouth.  I only lasted about an hour out there that day.

I planted over 100 plants last weekend.  And today I got ground cloth and some organic herbicide.  We’ll see how successful I am with keeping the weeds knocked down.  I’m somewhat worried about how slippery the ground cloth will be.  Hopefully I’ll be able to walk up and down the rows without breaking my neck.

The temperatures is supposed to get up to 90 degrees F this Friday/Saturday.  I’m hoping that the new growth doesn’t get scorched.

More later.

Weeding and more weeding!

Well, despite having showers on and off all weekend I managed to get about halfway done weeding the area in front of our house where some of the lavender is going.  I’m sore from it, but it is bearable since the aches were the result of some productivity on my part.  I always feel a great sense of satisfaction when I’ve been preparing an area for planting.  It’s like cleaning out a closet or something.  One must combat those feelings of procrastination and just get the ol’ gloves on and get right in there.

What helped me most this time is that I bought one of those garden claws last week at Tuesday Morning for $5.99.  It’s giving me a great workout, and my border is starting to look like something other than a mass of weeds.  I recommend them to all lazy gardeners.

All the plants seem fine!

After yesterday’s snow I brought all of the little plants inside again.  They perked up right away and it looks like they’ll all survive.  I feel like such a bad mother!

This morning I’m feeling relieved that I did bring them in because the overnight low temperature here was 24 degrees F.  I don’t know if that would kill them, but I’m glad that I didn’t take a chance.  I have a few plants that I didn’t bring in, just as an experiment.  They look alright, but the surface of their soil is still hard as ice.  I’ll have to take another look at them this afternoon.  I know they’d be alright if they were in the ground, but in pots…..?

There was snow in the orchard this morning when I woke up.  Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to start putting the lavender outside to harden off.  I hope that I didn’t kill any of the plants!

This is one of the things that I hate about farming~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
